Pet Rats, known as Rattus norvegicus domestica , is the common Fancy Rat. There are many coat colors, coat textures, and different genetic combinations that have been mastered by professionals for many years.
These guys are tons of fun, easy to care for, but also an unfortunately short commitment. Most Fancy Rats / Dumbo Rats don’t live past 4 years.
However in those 4 years there won’t be a dull moment. Every individual Rat has their own personality. Rats form extremely close bounds with their owners, and their cage buddies.
Many people wonder if owning just 1 Rat is enough. You can own one Rat, but their overall mental health, and physical health will not be as good as a Rat who at least has one cage buddy.
Here at RatScene we do push for new owners to understand the significance of owning at least 2 Rats. However we will adopt out one Rat if it is the new owners choice.
At RatScene all our Rats are seen by licensed Veterinarians, and handled by professional veterinary technicians. All of our Rats are accustomed to being around people, cats, and dogs. We provide our Rats over 7 different food options, all in which have been graded as the top diets by professionals.
Every single Rat at RatScene is trained to hang out on shoulders, rest comfortably in people’s hands, and most importantly don’t bite.
It is important for every owner to do their own research before owning a Rat.
However we will list a few things to help prompt further research.
Chewing!
Rats chew on everything. These guys only have 4 teeth. 2 upper and 2 lower. They will chew on finger nails, clothing, all types of fabrics, electronics and cords, wood, drywall, wire, and plastic to name a few. This can be a very destructive problem if you are not providing appropriate chew toys, and not providing enough attention.
Urine and Fecal!
Rats are very much like dogs, but not when it comes to using the restroom. When handling them, they may poop and on occasion pee on you. This is normal!
Especially if you have them hanging out on your shoulder, in a pouch or pocket for long periods of time. Rats are not capable of holding their poop or pee.
Water!
Rats drink A TON of water. Checking their water bottles is a daily task. If you expect to not check in or handle your rat daily while checking their cages for adequate water levels and food, then a pet Rat may not be the right choice for you.
Attention/ Affection!!!!!
Rats are extremely social animals. They need interaction. They love to play, run around and play the “escape game”. Yes escaping is a very fun game to them. Rats need to be handled frequently. Owning a Rat is not a complicated commitment.
At RatScene we take our permeant rattery residents with us everywhere, even to work! Doing this brings tons of positive and fun interactions with strangers. The Rats love the adventure! This helps rid them of any social fears, boosts their moral, and keeps them entertained.
